Learning Aim D - Evaluation Assignment
In order to advertise Ashbrooke Sports Club, i used two media platforms; i created a Facebook page and a radio advertisement.
I created a Facebook page in order to publicize Ashbrooke Sports Club to local people, and I informed the audience of the multiple uses of the club, including the fact that their were job opportunities e.g working as a barman / barmaid, if you weren't interested in playing in part of Ashbrooke's rugby or cricket teams. I decided to the sports club of Facebook as it is a very popular form of social media, if not the most popular. As shown on multiple websites, including https://social-media.co.uk/list-popular-social-networking-websites ,https://www.statista.com/statistics/280295/market-share-held-by-the-leading-social-networks-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/ and http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-dominates-most-popular-social-media-apps-chart-2017-7.
The radio advertisement i have created gets straight to the point of what i am aiming to achieve during this campaign, it advertises Ashbrooke sports club. At the very beginning, i advertise how successful one of the sports teams have been, which is rugby, what Ashbrooke is mostly known for by local people. I also use persuasive language and say how you could have a role to play at almost any age in the sports club, whether that be playing, working or supporting. At the end, as there is so much more to know about the club, I informed my target audience of where they can find out more by stating the official website and Facebook page of Ashbrooke.
In the audience feedback i received, i found out that it was "clear what my campaign was" and that i was raising awareness of Ashbrooke Sports Club. I also found out that my target audience is clear and obvious. As for my radio advertisement, it "is simple and gets straight to the point". The target audience is also obvious and it is good that i have mentioned the official Facebook page and website of Ashbrooke Sports Club.
I decided to release my Facebook page and radio advertisement to my target audience of locals of Sunderland. This is because Facebook, on several websites, is the most poplar used social media site. I chose the radio advertisement also as it can be advertised on local radio stations such as Sun FM and Capital North East. The two are linked together as they are both about Ashbrooke Sports Club and raising awareness of it by offering opportunities to work in the club or play for either of the sports teams. I mentioned the rugby team more as that is what Ashbrooke Sports Club is known most for. The release of the social media page and radio advertisement will occur roughly at the end of June or beginning of July, as that is when pre-season training starts for the rugby teams, and when the club will become most busy, both at the bar and in Diego's Italian Restaurant.

Learning Aim C - Social media platform
The social media platform I have chosen to use to advertise Ashbrooke Rugby & Cricket club is facebook. This is because I carried out a survey, as my primary research, to find out what the most popular platforms of social media are used by people in my college class and out of several platforms, twitter and Facebook were the most popular. I chose Facebook as i know how to use Facebook and twitter confuses me. As well as this, as my secondary research, i viewed several websites to see what the most popular social media platform was in the United Kingdom, and on several websites, including https://social-media.co.uk/list-popular-social-networking-websites ,https://www.statista.com/statistics/280295/market-share-held-by-the-leading-social-networks-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/ and http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-dominates-most-popular-social-media-apps-chart-2017-7, Facebook was the most popular.

Report on pre production
Josh Pool - unit 4 report on pre production assignment
Introduction
Pre production is a vital part of film making, that takes place before the first scene is shot. Pre production is the title of several compartments that all come together to produce the film. Things such as location scouting, storyboards and budget managing are all part of pre production.
Finance
The sources of finance for the film can come from joint financing, publicly or privately. Working out the financial side of the film, and working out to do with the budget is never the fun part of pre production, but is one of the most important factors. You need to make sure you are able to afford everything you wish to use help you produce your short film, ranging from green screen rooms and cameras, to the cast and locations.
Costs & Logistics
The costs and logistics need to be considered carefully and thoroughly. A logistics coordinator is another crucial person in the pre production of any film. They are responsible for several curtail jobs, which include location permits and permission, location scouting, lighting, travel et cetera.
Codes of practice and regulation
The possibility of copyright needs to be considered when deciding on, for example, what music you wish to use in your film. In order to use copyrighted music, you need to purchase the rights to do so, which has an effect on the budget to produce the film. The ASA, known as the advertising standards authority, regulate over all forms of advertisement in the media industry. The advertisements must be truthful and if a complaint is received about one, they will act on it by finding the advertisement and will either change or remove it, if it is found to break the code of the ASA.
Location
The process of location scouting takes place once the scriptwriters, producers or directors have decided on what kind of scenery is required for various scenes that are to be shot outside of the studio. When looking for potential locations you could use in your film, you must take into consideration the availability, if the area is private or public, the time of day/night you film, et cetera.
Casting
Casting can be quite a challenging task in pre-production. This process includes finding actors that have the possibility in fulfilling the role you want them to play, negotiating with agents & managers, keeping in mind the budget you have, preparing to audition actors and the audition itself. This process could be completed several times in order to weigh the pros and cons of all actors you have interested in the role you are offering, in order to fid the best possible fit.
Shot List
The shot list is a vital part of pre-production. This is a list of everything you need to film, which will able you to see what scenes you can shoot depending on the location you are at. You can shoot scenes in the later stages of the film first, and earlier scenes later, depending on the location you are using at the time. Having a shot list allows you to allocate what will be shot and when, which can save money in transportation, cameras, other equipment et cetera. The shot list makes it easier for those involved in each shot, as they will be informed of what they will be shooting and when.
Storyboard
Storyboarding is again one of the most important parts to pre-production. This is what shows what the director wants in each and every scene. It should also make everything obvious to everyone involved in the scene, including camera, lighting and sound crews, along with the directors, actors et cetera.

What i ned to do
- Create a report on pre production requirements, processes and documentation
- Include examples of finances, logistic, codes of practice regulations, location, crew, casting, shot list, sorry board, schedules.
Semiotic Theories
- We actively create meaning by decoding sign
- Semiology is the science of these signs
- Ferdinand de Saussure suggested signs are a combination of the signifier (e.g the image/ gesture/ word) (e.g what we assume it means once we have interpreted it)
Key terms
- Denotation - The literal meaning of the sign ( e.g a man giving a woman a diamond ring )
- Connotation - The meaning attached to the sign ( e.g the ring shows love, engagement )
- Symbol - A sign that stands for something - it must be culturally learned ( e.g our understanding of the significance of a man getting a woman a diamond ring )
Find two different film posters for films from different genres and with different target audiences.
Identify the signs and symbols that help the potential audience to decide on content and whether this film is suitable for them.
Intertextuality
- Media that influences other media
- All media products are influenced by others
- Some may refer directly to each other
- Intertextuality is our ability to uncover and recognize how media references itself
- We create meaning by recognizing
How the audience use media
The hypodermic needle model:
- Suggests we are all the same and we all react the same way - we soak up messages without question
Uses and gratifications model:
- Suggests audiences are much more active than the hypodermic needle model would suggest
- It suggests that an audience chooses media for their own specific needs and desires
- Personal relationships - social interactions e.g something to talk about with others
- Surveillance - educational purposes or to solve problems
- Personal identity - forming opinions, understanding ones self, influencing behaviors
- Diversion - entertainment, escape, habit, passing the time
Consider your own use of the media
Can you apply any elements of the uses and gratifications theory to your own consumption of the media?
Do you consider yourself active or passive? Does this vary depending on the media format you are decoding?
Music:
- My own playlists which include songs i like and would prefer to listen to
- Radio is pop culture but my favorite artists aren't in the popular culture
- Playlists on youtube, spotify, other phone apps
- Suggests we are all the same and we all react the same way - we soak up messages without question

Audience decoding

Preferred - Accept the message
Negotiated - Accept the message, agreeing and disagreeing with things
Oppositional - Rejecting the message
Aberrant - Missed the massage
Analyse and explain what you think may be preferred, negotiated, oppositional and aberrant readings of the cover. Consider the images, words and layout. Practice analyzing with correct terminology.
Closed texts

Consider how a message has been encoded with anchorage. What is the intended message?
The use of the alliteration 'Top Trump' gives the audience the impression Trump is a good thing for americans, which could be the editors opinion. The word top relates to the best, meaning Trump being elected as president was the best outcome in the editors opinion. Trump is a very America first person, and this is made obvious as the background is the american flag.

Stereotypical representations
-Said that representation is the production of meaning through language (spoken or visual)
-Suggested reality is mediated through language
-reality -> media machine (language) -> 'reality'
-Means the truth is filtered through perspective of person making the media

By these newspaper front covers, the producer makes their opinion obvious to their readers.

By these newspaper front covers, the producer makes their opinion obvious to their readers.
Richard Dyer
-Wrote in 'The Role of Stereotypes" about how the complexity and diversity of a group or individual is reduced to a few limited characteristics.
-Steryotypes exaggerate difference, which may create conflict between groups
-The media may not invent stereotypes, but do enforce them
-Steryotyping is a way of imposing order on diversity by oversimplifying traits
Stereotypes are a way of quickly conveying information about a character
Seeing certain assumptions may help construct audience perspective of them
-Identities can be constructed and communicated via stereotypes
-Those with power stereotype the less powerful
Laura Mulvey
-Argued that the audience (male or female) view women from the vantage point of a heterosexual man
-This is called Male Gaze
-It suggests that females are objectified in the media and are there for the viewing pleasure of the camera
Audience Positioning: Key Terms
Voyeurism - gratification from observing others when they are not aware
Scopophillia - deriving sexual pleasure from looking
Fetishism - Dehumanizing an object and transforming into something satisfying
Exhibitionism -Welcoming and encouraging an objectifying gaze
Narcissism -
Audience Coding - Roland Barthes
-Said texts were either open or closed
-He said none were fully one or the other, however some texts attempt to restrict their meaning more than others
-Some texts encourage polysemy (multiple meanings) and are open texts
-Some texts discourage polysemy and are closed texts
Open texts - poetry, experimental / independent film, abstract art, music lyrics
Closed texts - Instructions, recipe books, TV commercials, advertisements, leaflets

Learning Aim B - Task 2
I will be promoting the rugby club i play for, Sunderland Rugby Football Club. I will be looking to promote the club for potential players, new supporters and maybe even how you can work in Ashbrooke Sports Club, where my rugby club is based. I will promote my rugby club on a social media platform, wether that be instagram, Facebook, twitter or any other platform. I will also advertise the club by producing a radio advertisement that can be played on local radio stations such as Sun FM and Capital North East. I feel that this is one of the best ways to advertise as thousands of people across the north east drive and listen to the radio whilst doing so, and the two most popular radio stations in the north east are Sun FM and Capital North East. I would aim to start my campaign just before the rugby season starts again, which is mid September, as this is when the sports club is its busiest, and is all throughout the rugby campaign.
My target audience for the advertisement of my rugby club will be anyone looking to play for the club, work in Ashbrooke Sports Club, and people who may want to come down and support a local rugby team every other Sunday. The age groups of teams start from u7's up to u18's, as well as having 1st, 2nd and 3rd development sides. People who wish to support the teams can look through the social media platforms to find out where and when the teams will be playing. Those who wish to work at Ashbrooke Sports Club can either apply for a job in the bar or at Diego's Italian restaurant, which is located within the premises of the club.
In order to learn the level of knowledge and understanding of Sunderland RFC, i could make a server and distribute it on a platform, specifically for people of Sunderland e.g a Sunderland Council page.
To find out how my audience consumes media, i can collect results of what social platforms people in the local area uses. I could so this by creating a tally chart, making a survey or interviewing a number of people.
My target audience will be able to engage with my Rugby club by either supporting, playing for or working in Ashbrooke Sports Club.
Here is the survey i have made in order to find out whether local people are aware of a rugby club or not in their city, aware of Ashbrooke sports club, and to find out what is the most popular social media platform.

As for my radio advertisement, i have created a script which i will read off. I created a script so that i could get across all of the important information about Ashbrooke Sports Club and be able to persuade my target audience visit the official website and/or Facebook page for the club. Here is the script:
Home to the county plate winners for the 2017/18 season Sunderland Rugby Football Club, Ashbrooke sports club has more to offer than just the beautiful game. As well as having rugby teams from the age of 7 upwards, the club also has a cricket club. If sports isn't your thing, why not get yourself involved in the club by working in the bar or Diego's incredible Italian restaurant. To find out more, please visit www.ashbrookesports.org, or the clubs Facebook page www.facebook.com/AshbrookeSports.
I had to screenshot the images I used for my profile picture and cover picture, and then crop and resize them, for my Facebook page. https://www.livingnorth.com/northeast/people-places/lords-north and http://www.ashbrookesports.org/sports-bar/4575423821 is where i got the pictures from.
I asked a friend on his thoughts on my radio advertisement and social media platform. Here is his feedback;
The Facebook page has photos of what Josh is raising awareness for. He also explains his reasoning for choosing Facebook as his platform, explaining that he done primary research and also look at secondary research. On his Facebook page he also identifies his target audience. His radio advertisement is simple and gets straight to the point. He advertises his Facebook in the radio advert and also explains who his target audience is for the club.
Due to the feedback I received, I will proceed with the ideas I have for both the Facebook page and radio advertisement.

First Assignment
Unit
10-BTEC Media Film Assignment (Josh Pool)
Task: An analysis of the narrative and stylistic codes and conventions of
different film genres using detailed examples to illustrate points.
Action/Comedy Movies
Props such as guns, high speed
chases and people related to the law are stereotypical conventions of an action
movie. An example of this is the film Bad Boys II, which stars Martin Lawrence
and the very popular Will Smith. The later character alone would suggest comedy
and action would be in the film, making comedy and action a convection like
feature of Will Smith. Both Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin
Lawrence) are detectives that carry guns and are involved in high speed chases
in the film.
Another example of the conventions of an
action/comedy film is 22 Jump Street. Jonah Hill is infamous for being a comedy
actor, and he stars along with Channing Tatum in the film. When the audience
notice Jonah, if they know him, it may be correct to presume it is an
action/comedy film. In the film, the pair are undercover police officers who are
sent to a college to find the supplier of a drug. In order to fit in, the pair
go to both classes and parties with students they make friends with.
An obvious comedy scene in the
Action/Comedy movie of 22 Jump Street occurs roughly half way through the film,
where roughly four and a half minutes are dedicated to the following morning of
work after Jonah’s character Schmidt and his family, go out for a meal with his new
girlfriend who he met at college, and her family, who turns out to be his
Captains daughter. In the office, after Jenko, Channing’s character, realizes
why there’s so much tension, he makes it fairly obvious to the rest of the office
that his partner is dating the captain’s daughter, along with a thing or two they have done with each other.
This scene in particular is ment to enforce the humor of the film to the
audience, and reengage or even further engage them to the film.
A major difference between the two
Action/Comedy films is the settings in which they are set. 22 Jump Street may
appeal more to an audience of those who go to college, as that is where it is
mainly set, compared to Bad Boys II. Bad Boys II follows the two detectives all
over Miami as they investigate the flow of ecstasy, therefore making the film
involve the public much more than 22 Jump Street.
Sport Movies
One of the main convections of a sports
film is the rise from the bottom to the top of an athlete/ group of athletes.
Examples of this include the movies The Karate Kid and The Waterboy. This
convention of a sport movie is probably the maid one, which is the most obvious
throughout the film.
In The Karate kid, Daniel,
played by Ralph Macchio, is bullied by other children his age after
moving from Newark, New Jersey to Los Angeles, California. The maintenance
man in their new apartment complex named Kesuke Miyagi, who teaches Daniel karate, in order to prove that he can’t be bullied anymore, by beating the main bully in a karate
competition final.
In a particular scene in The Karate Kid, Daniel reveals he is more than
disappointed with moving away from Newark. Whilst smashing his elbow several
times of a wall and grabbing his head, Daniel states “I hate this place! I hate
this place! I want to go home!” Because of the words he uses along with the manner he does it in, it is
obvious Daniel is very uncomfortable with the drastic change his life has taken
as he still refers Newark to home. Furthermore, he makes his mother feel guilt
by explaining everything seems perfect to her whilst he “hates this place”.
In The Water Boy, camera
angles emphasize that he, Adam Sandler, called Bobby Boucher in the film, a
usually funny and entertaining character, is bullied and picked on by others in
his school, including the school’s football team who he is the water boy for. This particular shot is
both a head and shoulder shot, and an over the shoulder shot, which includes
two characters, one being Adam Sandler and the other being one of the football
players. The facial expression of the football player gives the opinion that he
doesn’t like the waterboy, as well as thinking he’s weird, due to the
stutter in his speech constantly. The image below is another example of how the
water boy is bullied by the football team. To the left of the water boy, it is
clear how much effort he puts into keeping the payers hydrated during the game
by lining up several cups, as well as carrying a tank of water on his back with
several cups, which in this scene, a plyer uses to spray water all over Adam.
Another convention in sports films usually
involves a rise from the bottom to the top, which happened in the karate kid
also. In fairy tale fashion, the water boy was used by the coach as both an
offense and defense player, playing in almost every position for the last game of
the season, resulting in the team winning the Bourbon Bowl 27-30, with himself
being named MVP, after arriving at the game, from the hospital, at half time
with his team down 27-0.Location Scouting sheet

The reason i performed a location scout is because i wanted to make sure i would have permission to film in Ashbrooke Sports Club, as that is where i play rugby.

Have you ever felt grateful for the roof
over your head? Or for the fact you have a bed to sleep in at night? I have a
young man with me who has a major role to play in changing homeless people’s
lives who look for help from the organization of Centrepoint UK, who have
come to the aid of roughly one hundred and twenty-five thousand people
between the ages of 16 and 25 since they were first founded in the year of
1969. Joe, firstly thanks for taking time out of your day to come and talk to
us about this brilliant organization. What more can you tell us about it?
Well Josh, thank you for giving me the
opportunity to tell the audience why I have one of the best jobs in the
world, helping thousands of homeless young people each and every year. I
haven’t been long in the job, but I can say with 100% confidence, I don’t
know another organization that has had such a huge impact on an enormous
number of homeless people’s lives then Centrepoint UK.
Well,
I guess it would be quite an honor seeing a person grow under your influence,
especially with getting to know them from being homeless, at such a young and
unimaginable age. Joe, you say it’s one of the best jobs in the world, so
because of that, I highly doubt Centrepoint give much more than a home to
these young people.
One of the things about the job is that
we don’t just give young people homes, but we also help them on their way to
fully independent living within 2 years, along with supporting these people
with counselling and practical advice so that they can rebuild their
confidence and start to look forward to the future again.
Wow, it’s a great thing that your organization
spend so much time with each individual, and giving them exactly what it is
they need to improve their lives drastically!
It’s not only that Josh, During the
targeted 2 years, we provide these incredible people with the confidence and
skills they need to find a job best suited to them, one that some know they’ve
wanted since as long as they can remember, others who had no idea what they
wanted to do after school or college. It’s not just the more advanced things
in life these people need, so we also teach them the basic skills in life
such as cooking and cleaning, to managing their money, which they’ll need in
order to have a fully independent and successful way of living.
Incredible stuff! My only worry is how
Centerpoint UK are able to fund something as big as this. Can you tell us
about where the funds come from please Joe?
For just 40p a day your room at Centrepoint
will:
Provide a warm, safe
space where a young person can stay with Centrepoint for up to two years, or
until they are ready to move on and lead independent lives
From just 40p a day you
can change a life by donating on our website www.centrepoint.org.uk, where you
can find examples of the young people we help for yourself, and look up what
exactly Centerpoint UK done to help them.
Joe, I can’t thank you enough for giving up your
time to come in and talking to us about this wonderful organization,
Centerpoint UK, And a big thaks to the audience for tuning in to listern to.
I hoe you can find a spare 40p in your pocket each month to donate!
