Josh Pool - unit 4 report on pre production assignment
Introduction
Pre production is a vital part of film making, that takes place before the first scene is shot. Pre production is the title of several compartments that all come together to produce the film. Things such as location scouting, storyboards and budget managing are all part of pre production.
Finance
The sources of finance for the film can come from joint financing, publicly or privately. Working out the financial side of the film, and working out to do with the budget is never the fun part of pre production, but is one of the most important factors. You need to make sure you are able to afford everything you wish to use help you produce your short film, ranging from green screen rooms and cameras, to the cast and locations.
Costs & Logistics
The costs and logistics need to be considered carefully and thoroughly. A logistics coordinator is another crucial person in the pre production of any film. They are responsible for several curtail jobs, which include location permits and permission, location scouting, lighting, travel et cetera.
Codes of practice and regulation
The possibility of copyright needs to be considered when deciding on, for example, what music you wish to use in your film. In order to use copyrighted music, you need to purchase the rights to do so, which has an effect on the budget to produce the film. The ASA, known as the advertising standards authority, regulate over all forms of advertisement in the media industry. The advertisements must be truthful and if a complaint is received about one, they will act on it by finding the advertisement and will either change or remove it, if it is found to break the code of the ASA.
Location
The process of location scouting takes place once the scriptwriters, producers or directors have decided on what kind of scenery is required for various scenes that are to be shot outside of the studio. When looking for potential locations you could use in your film, you must take into consideration the availability, if the area is private or public, the time of day/night you film, et cetera.
Casting
Casting can be quite a challenging task in pre-production. This process includes finding actors that have the possibility in fulfilling the role you want them to play, negotiating with agents & managers, keeping in mind the budget you have, preparing to audition actors and the audition itself. This process could be completed several times in order to weigh the pros and cons of all actors you have interested in the role you are offering, in order to fid the best possible fit.
Shot List
The shot list is a vital part of pre-production. This is a list of everything you need to film, which will able you to see what scenes you can shoot depending on the location you are at. You can shoot scenes in the later stages of the film first, and earlier scenes later, depending on the location you are using at the time. Having a shot list allows you to allocate what will be shot and when, which can save money in transportation, cameras, other equipment et cetera. The shot list makes it easier for those involved in each shot, as they will be informed of what they will be shooting and when.
Storyboard
Storyboarding is again one of the most important parts to pre-production. This is what shows what the director wants in each and every scene. It should also make everything obvious to everyone involved in the scene, including camera, lighting and sound crews, along with the directors, actors et cetera.
