Learning Aim C - Social media platform

The social media platform I have chosen to use to advertise Ashbrooke Rugby & Cricket club is facebook. This is because I carried out a survey, as my primary research, to find out what the most popular platforms of social media are used by people in my college class and out of several platforms, twitter and Facebook were the most popular. I chose Facebook as i know how to use Facebook and twitter confuses me. As well as this, as my secondary research, i viewed several websites to see what the most popular social media platform was in the United Kingdom, and on several websites, including https://social-media.co.uk/list-popular-social-networking-websites ,https://www.statista.com/statistics/280295/market-share-held-by-the-leading-social-networks-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/ and http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-dominates-most-popular-social-media-apps-chart-2017-7, Facebook was the most popular.

Home to the county plate winners for the 2017/18 season Sunderland Rugby Football Club, Ashbrooke sports club has more to offer than just the beautiful game. As well as having rugby teams from the age of 7 upwards, the club also has a cricket club. If sports isn't your thing, why not get yourself involved in the club by working in the bar or Diego's incredible Italian restaurant. To find out more, please visit www.ashbrookesports.org, or the clubs Facebook page www.facebook.com/AshbrookeSports.

The radio advertisement i have created gets straight to the point of what i am aiming to achieve during this campaign, it advertises Ashbrooke sports club. At the very beginning, i advertise how successful one of the sports teams have been, which is rugby, what Ashbrooke is mostly known for by local people. I also use persuasive language and say how you could have a role to play at almost any age in the sports club, whether that be playing, working or supporting. At the end, as there is so much more to know about the club, I informed my target audience of where they can find out more by stating the official website and Facebook page of Ashbrooke.

Report on pre production

Josh Pool - unit 4 report on pre production assignment

Introduction

Pre production is a vital part of film making, that takes place before the first scene is shot. Pre production is the title of several compartments that all come together to produce the film. Things such as location scouting, storyboards and budget managing are all part of pre production.

Finance

The sources of finance for the film can come from joint financing, publicly or privately. Working out the financial side of the film, and working out to do with the budget is never the fun part of pre production, but is one of the most important factors. You need to make sure you are able to afford everything you wish to use help you produce your short film, ranging from green screen rooms and cameras, to the cast and locations.

Costs & Logistics

The costs and logistics need to be considered carefully and thoroughly. A logistics coordinator is another crucial person in the pre production of any film. They are responsible for several curtail jobs, which include location permits and permission, location scouting, lighting, travel et cetera.

Codes of practice and regulation

The possibility of copyright needs to be considered when deciding on, for example, what music you wish to use in your film. In order to use copyrighted music, you need to purchase the rights to do so, which has an effect on the budget to produce the film. The ASA, known as the advertising standards authority, regulate over all forms of advertisement in the media industry. The advertisements must be truthful and if a complaint is received about one, they will act on it by finding the advertisement and will either change or remove it, if it is found to break the code of the ASA.

Location

The process of location scouting takes place once the scriptwriters, producers or directors have decided on what kind of scenery is required for various scenes that are to be shot outside of the studio. When looking for potential locations you could use in your film, you must take into consideration the availability, if the area is private or public, the time of day/night you film, et cetera.

Casting

Casting can be quite a challenging task in pre-production. This process includes finding actors that have the possibility in fulfilling the role you want them to play, negotiating with agents & managers, keeping in mind the budget you have, preparing to audition actors and the audition itself. This process could be completed several times in order to weigh the pros and cons of all actors you have interested in the role you are offering, in order to fid the best possible fit.

Shot List

The shot list is a vital part of pre-production. This is a list of everything you need to film, which will able you to see what scenes you can shoot depending on the location you are at. You can shoot scenes in the later stages of the film first, and earlier scenes later, depending on the location you are using at the time. Having a shot list allows you to allocate what will be shot and when, which can save money in transportation, cameras, other equipment et cetera. The shot list makes it easier for those involved in each shot, as they will be informed of what they will be shooting and when.

Storyboard

Storyboarding is again one of the most important parts to pre-production. This is what shows what the director wants in each and every scene. It should also make everything obvious to everyone involved in the scene, including camera, lighting and sound crews, along with the directors, actors et cetera.

What i ned to do

  • Create a report on pre production requirements, processes and documentation
  • Include examples of finances, logistic, codes of practice regulations, location, crew, casting, shot list, sorry board, schedules.

Semiotic Theories

  • We actively create meaning by decoding sign
  • Semiology is the science of these signs
  • Ferdinand de Saussure suggested signs are a combination of the signifier (e.g the image/ gesture/ word) (e.g what we assume it means once we have interpreted it)

Key terms

  • Denotation -  The literal meaning of the sign ( e.g a man giving a woman a diamond ring )
  • Connotation - The meaning attached to the sign ( e.g the ring shows love, engagement )
  • Symbol - A sign that stands for something - it must be culturally learned ( e.g our understanding of the significance of a man getting a woman a diamond ring )

Find two different film posters for films from different genres and with different target audiences.
Identify the signs and symbols that help the potential audience to decide on content and whether this film is suitable for them.

Intertextuality

- Media that influences other media

  • All media products are influenced by others
  • Some may refer directly to each other
  • Intertextuality is our ability to uncover and recognize how media references itself
  • We create meaning by recognizing

How the audience use media

The hypodermic needle model:

- Suggests we are all the same and we all react the same way - we soak up messages without question

Uses and gratifications model:

- Suggests audiences are much more active than the hypodermic needle model would suggest
- It suggests that an audience chooses media for their own specific needs and desires

- Personal relationships - social interactions e.g something to talk about with others
- Surveillance - educational purposes or to solve problems
- Personal identity - forming opinions, understanding ones self, influencing behaviors
- Diversion - entertainment, escape, habit, passing the time

Consider your own use of the media

Can you apply any elements of the uses and gratifications theory to your own consumption of the media?
Do you consider yourself active or passive? Does this vary depending on the media format you are decoding?

Music:

- My own playlists which include songs i like and would prefer to listen to
- Radio is pop culture but my favorite artists aren't in the popular culture
- Playlists on youtube, spotify, other phone apps

Audience decoding

Preferred - Accept the message
Negotiated - Accept the message, agreeing and disagreeing with things
Oppositional - Rejecting the message
Aberrant - Missed the massage

Analyse and explain what you think may be preferred, negotiated, oppositional and aberrant readings of the cover. Consider the images, words and layout. Practice analyzing with correct terminology.

Closed texts

Consider how a message has been encoded with anchorage. What is the intended message?

The use of the alliteration 'Top Trump' gives the audience the impression Trump is a good thing for americans, which could be the editors opinion. The word top relates to the best, meaning Trump being elected as president was the best outcome in the editors opinion. Trump is a very America first person, and this is made obvious as the background is the american flag.
